Coffee hybrids

Description

BSF
offers clones of F1 hybrids produced by rooting of cuttings, from mother plants
produced in the CATIE Biotechnology Laboratory. The plants are delivered
acclimatized, with lengths (tip to tip) of approximately 8-10 cm and must go to
the nursery phase for final development before planting out in the field. The nursery
period and management are identical as with traditional seedlings.

F1
hybrids were developed in the 1990s by CATIE, CIRAD, and PROMECAFE and
evaluated for about 15 years before their commercial release. Hybrids have a
high productive potential (between 30 and 50% more than the commercial
varieties currently used on farms in the region), vigor, adaptation to adverse
weather conditions (drought, waterlogged soils, frost) and excellent cup
quality. Three of them (Centroamericano, Esperanza and Milenio) show tolerance
to certain races of coffee leaf rust.

Deliveries
must be coordinated in advance, and availability varies constantly.

The
hybrids normally available are:

Milenio (Sarchimor T5296 x Rume Sudan)

Casiopea (Caturra 7 x Etiope 45)

H3 (Caturra x Etiope 531)

Excelencia (Caturra 7 x Etiope 531)

Centroamericano (Sarchimor T5296 x Rume Sudan) and Esperanza (Sarchimor
T5296 x Etiope 25) will be available soon.
The altitude (masl) recommended for the different hybrids is as follows:

Centroamericano: 700-2000

Milenio, Esperanza: 900-2000

Excelencia, Casiopea, H3: 1300-2000

Plantation establishment

Considering
the architecture of the plant and the greater branch length of the hybrids with
respect to the commercial varieties, it is recommended to use a spacing of 2.20
x 1.10 m or 2.20 x 1.20 m. Also, due to the higher productivity of hybrids
compared to traditional varieties, a higher fertilization is necessary
according to their needs. PROMECAFE suggests applying 30 g / plant of a high
phosphorus formula (e.g. 10-30-10) at planting time; the following two
applications with complete formula (e.g. 18-5-15-6-3) in the same dose (30 g /
plant), and the last one before the end of the rainy season with ammonium
nitrate in a dose of 20 g / plant . During the second year, it is recommended
to split up the fertilization into three applications: the first two with 45 g
/ plant of complete formula and the third with 30 g / plant of ammonium
nitrate.

Once
the crop enters full production, it is suggested to fertilize with 1000 kg / ha
of complete formula, distributed in two applications during the rainy season (May and
August) and an additional application of 210 kg / ha of ammonium nitrate in
November, or according to the level of production. Spraying with multi-minerals,
boron and zinc are suggested, similar to conventional management. Pruning,
shade management, as well as weeding, disease and pest control should be
similar to those used for conventional materials, and depend on the hybrid
used, the agronomic system and the agro-ecological conditions of the growing
area.
