Forest Seed Bank (BSF)
The CATIE Forest Seed Bank (BSF) was created in 1967 to support seed and forestry research. Today it is a self-sustainable unit within CATIE’s Agriculture, Livestock and Agroforestry Program (PRAGA), distributing seeds to more than 20 countries worldwide.
The BSF maintains a seed stock of 50 forest species important for commercial reforestation, agroforestry, ecological restoration and ornamental purposes. It also provides training and technical support to all levels, from individual producers to government programs.
The BSF’s breeding program has developed high quality genetic materials that have excelled in trials and plantations worldwide. These include melina (Gmelina arborea) and teak (Tectona grandis) seeds, certified by the Government of Costa Rica’s National Seed Office.
With over 50 years of experience, the BSF is ready to deliver seed to any destination worldwide within 1-2 weeks after receiving the import permits, and two days for local delivery.
To provide a better service to its users, the BSF has authorized distributors in Belize (Westroad Development Ltd.), Bolivia (Plant For), Colombia (El Semillero), Ecuador (Profafor Latinoamérica), Mexico (Agrinet) and Peru (Semirsa).
